Who do you think I am? Happily most of us know who we are! But sometimes people seem to expect too much of us and we have to ask them ‘who do you think I am? In the gospels we are told that the day came when Jesus asked his friends a similar question ‘who do people say I am.’ Everybody it seemed had an opinion! By this time Jesus was the most famous (or infamous man) in the land and everybody was talking about him. Nobody thought he was just an ordinary man. Some people said ‘he was John the Baptist risen from the dead’ or perhaps ‘the prophet Elijah’ who lived on this earth early in the history of Israel. How else could Jesus’ miracles be explained surely something supernatural was going on! Even the most unimpressed thought that he must be a prophet, someone sent with special authority from God. It’s easy though to talk about others ‘what do they think?’ Jesus then turned his question on his disciples ‘what about you?’ he asked ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter spoke for all of them; perhaps he’d only just seen the truth. ‘You are the Christ’ he said. That is you are the one God has been promising for so long; you are the one who has come to deliver us, the one who will change everything. As we look back in history we can see just how right Peter was. Jesus came into our world and changed everything even our dating system of BC and AD is based around the fact that Jesus came into our world. But what was it about Jesus that made him so special so that everything changed as a result. He was God in human flesh. He was no ordinary human yet he was fully human. His miracles clearly show us that Jesus is God. But why did he come into our world and in what way can he change everything for us. He came into our world to die, to be our Saviour. Therefore he can change our life by forgiving us of our sins and giving us eternal life. If he does that then everything in our lives will change. Our attitudes change our interests change and our goals change. Many Christians old and young can testify of the change that Jesus has made in their lives, and he can change your life too. But you must ask Him. You must admit that you need to change because you are a sinner. Jesus has died to forgive sin and everyone who asks Him will be forgiven and will receive the Holy Spirit who works in us by his power so that our lives begin to change. Why not ask Jesus to change you? He changed the life of those disciples all those years ago and he has been in the business of changing lives ever since.
